What is the meşk tool?
Meşk is the way makam music is learned from master to apprentice, by listening and repeating. The meşk tool is a music slow-downer for this kind of practice: it slows down or speeds up a recording between 30% and 150% without changing the pitch, loops a hard phrase A–B, can raise the speed by 5% each pass, and shifts the recording's ahenk in semitones and cents. The file is processed only in your browser and is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions
How do I slow down a song without distorting it?
Drop an audio or video file onto the tool and lower the speed slider. Because the pitch is preserved while slowing down, the melody stays in the same ahenk; only the speed changes.
How do I play a hard phrase over and over?
Select the loop range by dragging on the waveform or with the A and B keys. The "Raise the speed by 5% each pass" option starts the phrase slowly and speeds it up a little with every repeat.
Can I change the recording's ahenk to match my instrument?
Yes. With pitch shift you can move the recording by ±7 semitones, and with fine tuning cent by cent; that way you can play along on your own instrument with a recording made in a different ahenk (e.g. Bolâhenk or Kız).
Which files does it open?
It opens audio and video files your browser can play, such as MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG and MP4. The file never leaves your device.
