Life

Khoja Akhmet Yassawi was born in Sayram in Turkestan; his father was Sheikh Ibrahim of Sayram. At a young age he came under the guidance of Arslan Baba, and later became a disciple of Yusuf al-Hamadani in Bukhara. Settling in Yasi (today the city of Turkistan), he founded the Yasawiyya order. His religious and mystical poems, written in a Turkish the common people could understand, are called “hikmet”; they were collected under the title Divan-i Hikmet. He left a deep mark on the religious life of the Turks of Central Asia and on later Turkish Sufi poetry. Timur had a large complex built at the site of his tomb.[1, 2]
