Life

Avempace was born in Zaragoza in northern al-Andalus and died in Fez. He served as vizier in Zaragoza and was imprisoned several times because of political rivalries; he then moved to the Maghreb and served at court. Although known as a philosopher, among his contemporaries his fame in music stood out. Ibn Khaldun mentions him for his mastery in composing muwashshah. Of his writings on melody, only a short treatise has survived.[1, 2]
