Makam transposition (göçürme)
Transpose (göçür) a makam to another tonic (karar): the new pitches of the scale, AEÜ accidentals and key signature, kanun mandals, pitches outside AEÜ and makams that share the same scale.
In göçürme every pitch shifts by the same number of commas; the makam's intervals and çeşnis stay the same. Tap a note to hear that pitch.
Key signature and kanun mandals
The same letter appears in the scale with two different accidentals; only the first is written in the key signature, the other is written as an accidental in the score.

What is göçürme (şed)?
Göçürme, or şed, means moving a makam's scale to another perde without changing its interval structure; it is the counterpart of transposition in Western music. The göçürme tool moves the makam you choose to any perde and shows the new scale's perdes, AEÜ accidentals, key signature and kanun mandals. It also marks perdes that have no equivalent in AEÜ and other makams with the same scale.
Frequently asked questions
How do I transpose a makam to another perde?
Choose the makam and the new tonic; the whole scale is shifted by the same number of commas. For example, moving Hicaz from Dügâh to Nevâ raises the scale by 22 commas, and the new accidentals are calculated.
What if the transposed scale matches another makam?
A transposed scale sometimes turns out identical to another makam's scale. But a makam is defined not only by its scale but also by its seyir, tonic and dominant. The tool lists the makams with the same scale; you can compare their seyir on the makam pages.
Can a makam be transposed to any perde?
In theory yes, but some transpositions produce notes that have no equivalent among AEÜ's 24 perdes. The tool marks these perdes; they can be played with mandals on the kanun, and by finger placement on the ney and bowed instruments.
