    The story of the piece

The story linked to this piece, as told in the sources. The reliability of the source is shown above it; the sources are listed at the end of the page.

After the loss of his son

Dede Efendi’s first son Sâlih died in 1805 at the age of three, a year after the death of his sheikh Ali Nutkî Dede. It is told that Dede Efendi gave voice to this grief in this bayâtî beste, whose lyrics he also wrote. In 1810 he also lost his second son Mustafa. The year the beste was composed is unknown. Its first line[1, 2, 3]:

    Bir gonca-femin yâresi vardır ciğerimde

    gonca-fem: rosebud-mouthed, a beauty · gonca: an unopened rosebud · yâre: wound

    What do the sources say?
    • In the documents: from 1853 on, the piece appears in lyric anthologies and in a 19th-century manuscript in Hamparsum notation as Dede Efendi's bayâtî beste; these sources say nothing about its subject.
    • In the biographies: that the beste is an elegy for his son Sâlih, who died in 1805 aged three, and that the lyrics are Dede Efendi's, first appears in Rauf Yektâ's 1924 book; Yılmaz Öztuna (1987) and TDV (2001) repeat it.
    • Added later: the label "the first personal work in Turkish music"; it has no scholarly source, and composed elegies existed long before this piece.
    • Unknown: the year of composition; the date and present state of the gravestone at the Yenikapı Mevlevî lodge (its inscription is known only through Öztuna's account).
