Life

Duhânî Şerif Çelebi was born in Bursa; he was called Duhânî because he traded in tobacco in the Özbekler Bazaar in Bursa. When his shop burned in the great Bursa fire of 1801, he moved to Istanbul and settled in Üsküdar, joined the Celveti order and served for many years as zâkir (chanter of devotional hymns) at the Aziz Mahmud Hüdâyî Âsitâne. He was one of the well-known zâkirs and mevlid reciters of his time. He composed na't, durak and ilâhi, mostly on poems by İsmâil Hakkı Bursevî; of these, only two ilâhis are known with notation. His student Mehmed Rûşen Efendi served as sheikh of the Hüdâyî Âsitâne. He was buried in Bursa next to the tomb of Üftâde.
