Life

Gulam Şadi was a composer and singer (hânende) trained at the court of Herat; his father is thought to have been the singer Şâdî. Under the patronage of Husayn Bayqarah and Ali-Shir Nava'i he sang at court gatherings. Because of his fame he was sent to Kazan around 1512 at the request of Muhammad Amin, Khan of Kazan. It is reported that in the turmoil after the Khan's death in 1518 he was killed because of something he said. The signature “Gulâm” appears in some of his works; of the three kâr identified as his, the notation of two has been published. His brother Şâdî Beçe was also one of the important musicians of the period.[1, 2]
