Life

Avicenna was born in the village of Afshana near Bukhara and died in Hamadan, where he was buried. Known as a physician and philosopher, he counted music among the riyazi (mathematics-based) and educational sciences. The music sections of his works al-Shifa, al-Najat and the Persian Danishnama-yi Ala'i are among the principal sources that carry the 11th-century understanding of tones and intervals to the present day. His student Ibn Zayla also wrote a book on music following his path.[1, 2]
