Life

His full name was Abu Mansur al-Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn Umar ibn Zayla. He lived in Isfahan and was one of the leading students of Avicenna; because he summarized his teacher's works on natural philosophy he was called “Hakim”. In his book al-Kafi fi'l-musiqi, which builds on the legacy of al-Kindi and al-Farabi, he examined tone and time (rhythm); this work holds an important place in the history of Islamic music. He also wrote a commentary on Avicenna's tale Hayy ibn Yaqzan.[1, 2]
