Life

Mahmud II (1785–1839), who reigned from 1808 to 1839, was the thirtieth Ottoman sultan; in his poems he used the pen name “Adlî”. As a prince he was influenced by the music gatherings of his uncle Selim III, from whom he took meşk and learned to play the tanbur and the ney. He composed works in the şarkı, march and tavşanca forms; his Hicaz kalenderi, whose lyrics are also his own, is his best-known work.[1]
