Life

Mehmed Said Dede was born in Istanbul, the son of Mahmud Dede, şeyh of the Beşiktaş Mevlevîhane. He grew up in the Mevlevîhane, served for a long time as neyzenbaşı and became şeyh in 1851; he died two years later, in 1853. He is regarded as one of the leading ney virtuosos of his time and trained neyzens such as his son Neyzen Yûsuf Paşa and his half-brother Sâlih Dede. Among the three saz semais that have survived, the Şevkefza saz semai is especially admired.[1, 2]
