Born in 1842 in Medina, he died in 1895 in Bebek, Istanbul. He was a composer, performer and music teacher; he briefly served as imam to the sultan and directed the Kız Sanâyi Mektebi (Girls' School of Crafts). He played the ud, tanbur and lavta and was trained by Kazasker Mustafa İzzet Efendi. Leylâ Saz and Suphi Ezgi were among his students; most of his works are şarkıs.
