Life

Dede Ömer Rûşenî was born in the Aydın region (Tire or the village of Yenice according to sources). He went to Baku and became a disciple of Seyyid Yahyâ-yı Şirvânî, regarded as the second pir of the Halvetiyye. After his sheikh's death he went to Tabriz at the invitation of the Aq Qoyunlu ruler Uzun Hasan, settled in the dervish lodge built by Uzun Hasan's wife Selçuk Hatun, and died there. Besides his Divan he wrote verse works such as Neyname and Miskinlikname; his poems on divine love were set to music and sung for a long time in the tekkes. The Rûşeniyye branch of the Halvetiyye goes back to him; his student İbrâhim Gülşenî founded the Gülşeniyye.
