After Çeşmidilber left
While teaching music to the harem women at the palace of Sultan Abdülmecid, Hacı Ârif Bey fell in love with Çeşmidilber; the two were married and Ârif Bey left the palace. As the story goes, one day Çeşmidilber left him; Ârif Bey returned to his post at the palace and expressed the grief of this separation in this song. Its first line[1, 2]:
Niçin terkeyleyip gittin a zâlim
terkeylemek: to leave, to abandon · zâlim: cruel one

- In the documents: a stipend granted in 1854 to Çeşmidilber Hanım, discharged from the palace; Ârif Bey receiving a stipend in 1858 as one discharged from palace service; a joint petition by the two (Ottoman Archives; Talip Mert 2016).
- In the biographies: their meeting during the harem lessons, their marriage, Çeşmidilber leaving Ârif Bey, his return to the palace and the song being composed after this separation (TDV 1996; Yılmaz Öztuna 1986).
