    A wedding gift

It is told that Rahmi Bey, in a time of financial hardship, was invited to the wedding of a musician friend. He had no money for a present, so he offered this song, whose lyrics he also wrote. It is also said that the gift was for the wedding of Muazzez Hanım, the kanun teacher of the Dârülelhan; the date of the wedding is unknown. The song opens by addressing a musician of fine taste[1, 2, 3]:

    Ey mutrıb-ı zevk-âşinâ
    Bir şarkı yaptım ben sana

mutrıb: musician · zevk-âşinâ: refined, a person of taste

    What do the sources say?
    • In the documents: Muazzez Hanım was hired in 1918 as a performer in the women's section of the Dârülelhan and taught kanun after 1921; Rahmi Bey was a director at the Dârülelhan in the same years (Ottoman Archives; Tümer Erdem 2012).
    • In the biographies: the song as a wedding gift first appears in Sevengil (1964), for an unnamed friend; Muazzez Hanım's name first appears in the TDV (2007), without a source.
    • Differences between sources: the third line of the lyrics appears in two forms, "Tarzı, usûlü nev-edâ" and "Reftâr-ı tarz-ı nev-edâ"; the lyrics mention neither a wedding nor a gift.
    • Unknown: the date of the wedding, Muazzez Hanım's life dates and husband, and the source of the surname "Yurcu".
