صبا

A makam with Dügah (A) as its tonic and Çargah (C) as its dominant, known for its sorrowful, moving color and also used in the call to prayer (ezan).

In Arabic music this makam is known as Saba (صبا).
Structure
It is formed by the Saba tetrachord (K S S) on Dügah and the Hicaz tetrachord on Çargah. The fourth pitch of the Saba tetrachord is not Neva but Hicaz (D flat), so the scale does not quite complete an octave.

Pitch usage in the archive
Time and effect in early sources
- Time: the old edvâr lists give no time for it; the dawn call to prayer (ezan) and the salâ are traditionally recited in Sabâ.
- Effect: Şirvânî counts the Sabâ branch (şube) among the modes that bring sorrow and calm.[1, 2]
This is the tradition reported by Fethullah Şirvânî (15th century) and Hekim Şuûrî (17th century); it is not a scientific or medical claim. The makam of the same name in that period may not be identical to today's.
