Life

Mahmud I was born in 1696 in Edirne, the son of Mustafa II; he sat on the Ottoman throne from 1730 until his death in 1754. Before his accession he spent his time on arts such as poetry, music and calligraphy; he wrote poems under the pen name Sebkatî. He is recorded as having been a tanbur-playing instrumentalist and composer who supported music gatherings at the palace. Some of the instrumental works attributed to him have survived.[1, 2, 3]
