Life

The composer, whose real name was Sâlih Vasfi Mehmed, was born in 1807 in Istanbul, the son of the steward (kethüda) of the waterworks guild. When his singing of ilahis was admired, he was admitted to the Enderun; he became a musâhib (companion) of Mahmud II and muezzin to the sultan. Among his teachers, İsmâil Dede Efendi had a special place. He later served as district governor (kaymakam) in several districts and joined the Mevlevî order. He was known for his brilliant voice and for his works in the şarkı form, which was newly spreading at the time. He died in 1862.[1, 2]
