In brief
Life
Born in 1860 in Fatih, Istanbul, he died in 1890 in Beylerbeyi. A hânende and composer trained by Hacı Ârif Bey, he also played the ud and lavta. Because he could not read music, most of his works were lost; even so, more than two hundred of his şarkıs have survived. He is known especially for his şarkıs in the Uşşak makam; Bimen Şen was one of his students.[1, 2]

Tale
The door of uşşak
Şevkî Bey composed more than two hundred songs in makam uşşak. As the story goes, when Zeki Ârif Ataergin was asked why he had written nothing in this makam, he said Şevkî Bey had handled uşşak so beautifully that he had “closed the door of uşşak”. It is also told that Şevkî Bey composed his songs on the spot while reading the poem.[3]
