Life

Derviş Sadâyî was born in Istanbul and learned music from the masters of his time. He joined the Gülşeniyye order and stayed for a long time at the İbrâhim Gülşenî lodge (âsitâne) in Cairo; he then settled in Bursa and died there in 1655. Known for his beautiful voice, Sadâyî reached the height of his fame in the reign of Murad IV. Although many of his beste and ilâhis are recorded in lyric anthologies (güfte mecmuası), his only work that survives in notation is the saba ilâhi beginning “Gelmişim vahdet ilinden”.
