Life

Born in Vefa, Istanbul; because of his mastery of the ney he is called “Kutbünnâyî” (pole of ney players). He became a disciple of Gavsî Ahmed Dede, şeyh of the Galata Mevlevîhane, became neyzenbaşı in 1680 and was appointed şeyh of the same Mevlevîhane in 1697. He developed a system of notation that bears his name. Besides his famous mi'râciyye, he composed four Mevlevî âyins, tevşihs, peşrevs and saz semais; he also wrote works on music theory.[1, 2]
