Life

Giuseppe Donizetti was born in the Italian city of Bergamo; he was the elder brother of the opera composer Gaetano Donizetti. He served as bandmaster in Napoleon's army and later held the same post in the Sardinian (Savoy) army. In 1828, at the invitation of Mahmud II, he came to Istanbul and took charge of the newly founded Muzıka-yı Hümâyun (Imperial Band); there he established Western notation and band training and taught members of the court. He composed the Mahmudiye March and was given the rank of pasha. He remained in Istanbul until his death; he was succeeded by his student Necib Paşa.[1, 2]
