About this workThe story of the piece
The story linked to this piece, as told in the sources. The reliability of the source is shown above it; the sources are listed at the end of the page.
Nailî's real name was Mustafa; he was born in Istanbul and was also known as Pîrîzâde. Like his father he worked in the Mining Office (Maden Kalemi) and rose to serhalife (chief clerk); at one point he was exiled by Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha. He is one of the pioneering poets of the Sebk-i Hindî (Indian style); he is known for ghazals laden with Persian compounds and based on abstract imagery. His student Hâfız Post set many of his poems to music. His Divan contains kasides, about 390 ghazals and other poems. He is called Nâilî-i Kadîm (Nâilî the Elder) to distinguish him from the later Nâilî of Manastır.
