Life

Mehmed Said Dede was born in Istanbul; he was the son of Mahmud Dede of Tripoli (Trablusşam), sheikh of the Beşiktaş Mevlevihane. He served for a long time as neyzenbaşı (head ney player) of this lodge, was appointed its sheikh in 1851 and died about two years later. He is regarded as one of the leading ney masters of his time. Three of his instrumental works have survived, of which the şevkefzâ peşrev stands out. His brother Sâlih Dede, his son Yûsuf Paşa and Üsküdarlı Sâlim Bey were his students. He was first buried in Beşiktaş; his grave was later moved to the Bahariye Mevlevihane.
