Pitch and interval

Orta ikili (neutral second)

Orta ikili

A second between a semitone and a whole tone, roughly 130–170 cents. Arab music theory writes it as three quarter tones (150 cents). In Turkish makam music some intervals heard in performance around pitches such as Segâh and Eviç fall in this range; AEÜ notation writes them as a 5-comma küçük mücenneb or an 8-comma büyük mücenneb. The Dügâh–Segâh interval of the Uşşak tetrachord, for example, is 8 commas (about 181 cents) on paper but usually narrower in measured performances. The audio example plays 7 commas (about 158 cents) above Dügâh.
