Life

Dilhayat Kalfa was an 18th-century Ottoman woman composer; the title “Kalfa” suggests that she served at the palace. She is also known to have played the tanbur. Although some sources mention nearly a hundred compositions, only about thirteen of her works have survived. In music circles she is remembered as the first important woman composer of Turkish music. Knowledge of her life expanded when her estate inventory was found in the archives in 1998.[1, 2]
