Kemençeci Vasil (Vasilaki), of Greek origin, was born in 1845 near Silivri and died in 1907 in Istanbul. In his youth he played the clarinet; he learned the classical kemençe from Fenerli Yorgi and took meşk of the repertoire from Lavtacı Andon and his brother Civan. With the new playing techniques he introduced, he brought the kemençe from kaba saz ensembles into ince saz ensembles; he played together with Tanburi Cemil Bey and Ûdî Nevres Bey. He composed peşrevs and saz semais.[1, 2]
