Life

The son of Sultan Ahmed I and Kösem Sultan; he was born in 1612 in Istanbul, ascended the throne in 1623 at the age of eleven and reigned until his death in 1640. He is known for his harsh rule and his wars with the Safavids. He wrote poetry under the pen name Murâdî; music gatherings were held at his court, and musicians such as Benli Hasan Ağa enjoyed his patronage. He is counted among the composers of mehter music; his Eviç ilahi “Uyan ey gözlerim”, whose lyrics are also his own, is still sung.[1, 2]
