Life

Zurnazenbaşı İbrâhim Ağa, trained in the Enderun, was a mehter composer and zurna virtuoso who rose to chief zurna player of the palace mehter band. He became a disciple of Mehmed Nasûhî Efendi, şeyh of the Halvetî-Şâbânî order, and also composed religious music. Twenty-five of his works are mentioned in Kantemiroğlu's edvâr; he is regarded as one of the important composers of the 17th-century mehter repertoire. His Uşşak peşrev is still played today.
