Life
Yûsuf Dede was born in Konya in 1605. He was trained by Bostan Çelebi in Konya and by Âdem Dede at the Galata Mevlevi Lodge in Istanbul, and became neyzenbaşı (chief ney player) of that lodge. Because of his mastery of the çeng (harp) he was given the nickname Çengî. Murad IV heard him playing the ney and took him into the palace; after the sultan's death he withdrew to the Beşiktaş Mevlevi Lodge and became its sheikh in 1663. He left the hüseynî peşrev “Feryâd-ı Yûsuf”, recorded by Cantemir, and an edvar treatise. He died in 1670.
