He was born in Tosya, in the province of Kastamonu, came to Istanbul at a young age and was trained at the Enderun palace school; his principal music teacher was Dellâlzâde İsmâil Efendi. From the age of thirteen he sang in the fasıl performances held in the presence of Sultan Abdülmecid. After leaving the palace he settled in Kadıköy, where he taught and composed; at the invitation of Khedive İsmâil Pasha he went to Cairo twice. Forty-three of his şarkı have survived. Şekerci Cemil Bey, Lemi Atlı and Nuri Duyguer are among the singers he trained.
