Ses düzeni (tuning system)

Ses düzeni

The system that sets the number and positions of the pitches within the octave in a musical tradition. In the history of makam music, Safiyyüddin Urmevî’s 17-pitch system, the 24-pitch Arel-Ezgi-Uzdilek system built on Pythagorean ratios, the division of the octave into 53 equal commas and the 72-equal division behind today’s kanun mandals (six mandals per semitone) have been used or proposed; the Western piano divides the octave into 12 equal semitones. On this site notation follows AEÜ and is played in 53 equal commas; the kanun is tuned to the 72-equal division by default.
