Born in 1851 in Yenişehir (Larissa), he grew up from an early age in the Mevlevîhane there. He served in the Ministry of Finance and in the fire brigade, took part in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 and rose to the rank of fire brigade commander. He learned the ney from Hasan Dede and Neyzen Sâlim Bey; because he was the most accomplished girift player of his time he received the epithet “Giriftzen”. He was also known as a composer; he died in 1929 in Istanbul.[1, 2]
