His birthplace and birth year are unknown; he died in 1925. He is known as the performer who first used the clarinet in Turkish music; he successfully applied the Turkish tonal system to the instrument and paved the way for the clarinet's place in Turkish music. He also played the tanbur, and about fifteen of his works survive. He was the father of the violinist and composer Naci Tektel.
