Life

Born in 1801 in Tosya, while studying at a madrasa in Istanbul he learned religious music from Kömürcüzâde Hâfız Mehmed Efendi; he was then admitted to the Enderun. As chief muezzin he took part with his voice and his ney in the court fasıls of Mahmud II. He rose to be imam to Abdülmecid and kazasker (chief judge) of Rumelia. He was one of the great masters of 19th-century Ottoman calligraphy; the large roundels in Hagia Sophia are his work. He died in 1876.[1, 2]
