Life

Reftar Kalfa was a 17th-century woman composer known for her instrumental works; she is regarded as one of the first Ottoman women composers known by name. Almost nothing is known about her life; the title kalfa suggests she was raised in the harem, and the style of her works has given rise to the view that she played the tanbur. She is estimated to have died in the late 17th or early 18th century. Her peşrevs and saz semais, some of them in rare makams, have survived.[1, 2]
