Life

Mehmed Zaîfî Efendi was born in the village of Akbaba in Beykoz, the son of the imam Hâfız Mustafa Efendi. He became a hafiz at a young age and received his first musical training from his father; he received an icazet in the thuluth and naskh scripts from Kanlıcalı Mustafa Efendi. Because he succeeded his father as imam of Akbaba, he was known by this nickname. In Bursa he received authorization (hilâfet) from the Celvetî sheikh Üftâdezâde İbrâhim Sâdık Efendi. He wrote poetry under the pen name Zaîfî, composed many religious works and wrote a short treatise on music; two of his ilâhis in makam segâh have survived.
