Life

Küçük İmam Mehmed Efendi was born in Istanbul; his beautiful voice attracted attention at a young age and he took lessons from the masters of his time. He served as na'thân (singer of na't) at the Yeni Valide Mosque in Eminönü; Evliya Çelebi mentions him among the newly rising singers. Because of his compositions with rarely heard melodies grounded in theoretical knowledge, he was called “imâm-ı fen” (master of the art). Sources state that he composed more than five hundred works; five of his works in the kâr, beste and ilâhi forms have survived, among them beste in hicaz and bayâtî.
