Süleyman Erguner was born in 1902 in Sultanselim, Istanbul, the son of Hâfız Hasan Efendi, muezzin of the Sultan Selim Mosque. After his father's death he served as muezzin at the same mosque, then worked for a long time in Anatolia as an official of Tekel (the state monopoly). He learned the ney largely through his own efforts, benefiting from Sadettin Kaynak and Mecid Sesigür. Around 1950 he founded the Erguner Ensemble at Istanbul Radio. Ulvi Erguner, Niyazi Sayın and Alâeddin Yavaşça were among his students; 20 of his compositions are known, as ilâhi, şarkı and instrumental works.[1]
