Life

Sütçüzâde Abdüllatif Efendi was the son of the famous musician Sütçüzâde Îsâ Efendi and learned music from his father. In his youth he became a disciple of the Halvetî sheikh Ümmîsinanzâde Hasan Efendi; for this reason he was known as “Ümmî Sinan Hâfızı”. He spent most of his life in tekkes and zaviyes in Istanbul. He became famous especially for his settings of his own poems; in his poetry he used the pen name Hâfız. His compositions are recorded in lyric anthologies, but their notation has not survived. He died in Cairo during the pilgrimage to Mecca.
