Life

Tevfik Fikret was born on 24 December 1867 in Aksaray, Istanbul, and studied at the Galatasaray Mekteb-i Sultânî. He was the leading figure of the Edebiyât-ı Cedîde (New Literature) movement that gathered around the journal Servet-i Fünûn, which he edited from 1896; he advocated spreading meaning across the whole poem rather than the single couplet. He taught Turkish at Robert College and for a time served as director of Galatasaray. His main books are Rübâb-ı Şikeste (1900), Halûk'un Defteri (1911) and Şermin (1914), written for children. He died in Istanbul in 1915.[1, 2]
