Usuls of Turkish Music

Pick an usul and press play: the kudüm is shown from where the player sits; the left of the screen is your left. If you have a kudüm in front of you, you can follow the screen and strike the same drum with the same hand. Set the tempo, or play it with velvele.

What is an usul, and how is the kudüm played?

An usul is the rhythmic pattern that accompanies a melody in Turkish music, built from strong (düm) and weak (tek, ke) strokes; one full pass of the pattern is called a devir. The kudüm is a percussion instrument made of two leather-covered copper bowls with camel skin stretched over them; the usul is kept on it especially in Mevlevi music. Düm is struck with the right stick on the large (low) drum at the player's right, tek and ke with the left stick on the small (high) drum at the left; when the right stick crosses to the small drum the stroke is te. In this tool the kudüm is drawn from the player's view, so someone with a kudüm in front of them can follow the screen with the same hand on the same drum.

How to use it

  1. Pick an usul from the list or browse with the ‹ › arrows; its time and düm-tek boxes appear at once.
  2. Tap the play button or the drawing of the instrument; the strokes come alive from the player's view.
  3. Set the tempo with the slider; choose Velvele if you like, and change the instrument (kudüm, bendir, def, darbuka, davul).
  4. Enlarge the stage with the full-screen button; Space plays and stops, ← → change the usul.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a metronome?

A metronome gives every beat the same click. This tool plays the usul's düm-tek pattern: düm is low and strong, tek high and light, ke an in-between stroke. In aksak usuls the long and short beats fall in the right place. To keep tempo only, use the site's metronome.

What is an aksak usul?

Usuls whose beats are not grouped evenly: the 9/8 Aksak is grouped 2+2+2+3, the 7/8 Devr-i Hindî 3+2+2, the 5/8 Türk Aksağı 2+3. The düm-tek boxes on the stage show these groups by their width.

What is an usul with velvele?

Velvele means playing the long beats of an usul ornamented by splitting them into smaller strokes. When you select “With velvele”, long düms and teks are filled with “te-ke” in-between strokes; usuls whose velvele formula is found in the sources, such as Devr-i Kebîr, are played as the source gives them.

Why is the instrument drawn from the player's view?

So that someone with the instrument in front of them can follow the screen with the same hand on the same spot: the left of the screen is the player's left. On the kudüm, düm is struck with the right hand on the large drum at the right, tek and ke with the left hand on the small drum at the left.

Is it free, and does it work offline?

It is free and needs no account. Add it as an app to open it full screen and use it without a connection.
