Life
Ali Rıza Şengel, also known as Eyyûbî Ali Rıza Bey, was born in Eyüp, Istanbul; his father was the zâkirbaşı Eğrikapılı Mehmed Efendi. He studied solfège and theory in the studio of Muallim İsmail Hakkı Bey, took meşk of the religious repertoire in tekkes and served as zâkirbaşı in many tekkes. In 1914 he became mehterbaşı (bandmaster) of the Mehterhane, and he worked on radio and in the conservatory's performance ensemble. He is also known for his collection of ilahis; he died in 1953.[1, 2, 3]
