Born in 1885 in Thessaloniki, he died in 1948 in Istanbul; he later took the surname Candan. He abandoned his medical studies to turn to music and became a masterly kanun player. In Istanbul he played in gazinos (music halls) and in the ensemble of the Municipal Conservatory; as head of the Turkish music department of the His Master's Voice record company, he made possible a great number of recordings. About fifty of his works are known.
