Life
The composer, also known as Hoca Ziya Bey or Üsküdarlı Ziya Bey, was born in 1877 in Üsküdar; he was the nephew of the musician Behlül Efendi. When he retired in 1916 from his post at the Ministry of War, he devoted himself to music; he taught at institutions such as the Üsküdar Music Society and the Darülelhan. He received this epithet because of his fondness for the Bestenigâr makam. Münir Nureddin Selçuk and Selahattin Pınar were among his students; he died in 1923 in Mersin.
