Life

Born in 1880 in Vefa, Istanbul, he died in 1955 in Istanbul. He was a jurist and practised as a lawyer for many years. He studied music with Hüseyin Fahreddin Dede and harmony with Edgar Manas. He is one of the principal founders of the makam theory known today as the Arel-Ezgi-Uzdilek system. He trained many students through the lessons he gave at his home and composed many works, above all religious ones.[1, 2]

Contributions to music theory[2]

  • Tone system: He defined the tone system of Turkish music as 24 pitches with unequal intervals; the Arel-Ezgi(-Uzdilek) notation used today bears his name.
  • Views: He regarded folk and art music as branches of a single whole and argued that the national music is heptatonic, not pentatonic.
  • Works: Türk Musikisi Nazariyatı Dersleri (1968) is considered the field's first textbook; in 1948 he began publishing Musiki Mecmuası with Lâika Karabey.
  • Institutions: He chaired the Scientific Board of the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory and founded the İleri Türk Musikisi Konservatuvarı Derneği.
