Life

Kemani Serkis Efendi (Sarkis Suciyan) was born in 1885 in Istanbul; his father was the kemençe player Onnik Efendi of Üsküdar. He studied at the Makruhyan School in Beşiktaş, and his violin teacher was Kemânî Aleksan Ağa. As an Armenian composer and violinist he composed nearly a hundred şarkıs; the Nihavend “Kimseye etmem şikâyet” is his best-known work. By adding the Kürdî tetrachord to the Rast makam he created the Rast-kürdî combination. In 1921 he settled in Paris, where he died in 1944.[1, 2]
