Life

Suyolcu Lâtif Ağa was a 19th-century musician known as much for his teaching as for his compositions. What is known of his life comes mostly from the biographies of his students. He taught Turkish music theory and usul in the Enderun and in the Mızıka-yı Hümayun. Kanûnî Mehmed Bey received his first training in the Enderun from him and from Hacı Arif Bey; Muallim İsmail Hakkı Bey took lessons in theory and usul from him in the Mızıka-yı Hümayun, and Medenî Aziz Efendi also learned from him. The Latif Ağa named among Tanbûrî Ali Efendi's first teachers was probably the same man.
